What are Academies?
Academies are smaller learning communities within a school that draw on the interests that students have in learning about the world of work. Learning within an academy will also motivate students to take their core courses more seriously. The academy needs to be connected to interested employers in the community who will provide the support needed: advisory board members, speakers, field trip hosts, mentors, and internships. And it needs to be an industry that is healthy and growing, so there will be jobs when academy graduates are ready for them.
The Academies prepare students for post-secondary education and careers through academic learning and hands-on work experiences within a theme-based, contextualized curriculum. Students are exposed to broad career opportunities in the work force so that they can make sound choices for the future.
