About the Curriculum
This course is designed to provide a basic overview of current business and information systems and trends while introducing students to the basic skills and foundations required to succeed in today's business environments. Emphasis is placed on developing touch keyboarding proficiency, computer applications skills including word processing, spreadsheet, database and electronic presentation software tools for accomplishing business related job objectives that enhance workplace performance. Additionally, students will develop communication, basic office employability skills. Special emphasis is placed on developing students' MSWord software application skills. FCAT Reading strategies are included and are part of the daily activities/projects in this course.
Goals
Upon completion of this course students should acquire skills that enable them to be ready for testing at the Microsoft Office Proficient Specialist Level and will have met OCP-Data Code A, General Office Clerk - OES 55347.
Required Materials
Students are expected to have a 3-ring binder with dividers, floppy or CD disks to save work at school and home, science and/or poster boards and business attire.
Important Message to Parents
Students will be required to wear business attire every second Wednesday of every month. Students will receive a Home Learning grade. Students will be presenting projects on a monthly basis and are expected to be in business attire for presentations of projects. The teacher will adhere to this timeline as much as possible. In the month of October, however, students will dress in business attire the second Tuesday of the month. Whenever there are changes to the dates, students will be notified well in advance and whenever possible it will be posted on the website.
Students will receive a weekly conduct grade based on Work-Related Behaviors. Students were asked to have the form signed by their parents the third week of school.

Student Organizations
Students at John A. Ferguson are encouraged to become members of the Future Business Leader of America (FBLA) club. Visit the National FBLA-PBL website for more information. Membership applications can be picked up in Portable 4 anytime, Portable 13 during second period or complete the FBLA Creed form (found by clicking on the link below) and return it to Ms. Marin in Portable 4. Students will participate in district and state competitions, community service activities and professional field trips. FBLA members qualify for the Gold Seal Scholarship.
