About the Curriculum

The E.S.O.L. (English to Speakers of Other Languages) Department has four levels of Developmental Language (Reading) Courses. They are ESOL 1 for beginners, ESOL 2 for low intermediate students, ESOL 3 for high intermediate students and ESOL 4 for advanced ESOL students. A student may be classified as an ESOL 5 student once she/he has exited the program. In addition, ESOL students have an English class. English 1 through ESOL for 9 th graders, English 2 through ESOL for 10 th graders, English 3 through ESOL for 11 th graders and English 4 through ESOL for 12 graders. All ESOL students receive three hours of English every other day as we are on the 4 x 4 schedule.

Students are expected to spend one year in each level once they enter the program. Depending on a student’s capability, a student can spend as little as 2 years and as much as 6 years in the program. Here at Ferguson High, we offer a Bilingual Content Curriculum in most of our courses being offered to the ESOL 1 & 2 students whose native language is Spanish. We also have a paraprofessional who is here to assist the ESOL 3 &4 students, however if her schedule allows, she also helps the ESOL 1 & 2 students.

Goals
The ultimate goal of the E.S.O.L. Department at John A. Ferguson High School is that while supporting the guidelines of our School Improvement Plan and the Secondary School Reform Initiative, we aid our students in acquiring a mastery of English so as to make it possible for them to exit the program and register in higher level courses.
Required Materials
Each ESOL teacher has his/her specific list of materials needed in that specific class. Please make sure you are always one hundred percent ready for class.
Important Message to Parents
We here at JAF have a department in place to serve our students and their parent, however it is necessary for all concerned to work together for your child’s benefit. Please feel free to bring concerns to our attention that will help your child be more successful. An emphasis on reading and speaking English in addition to listening are skills which are important when acquiring a new language.
